The skinny on wetsuits

You know you need a wetsuit for the June Lake Tri, but how to pick the right one for you?

Here are some basics, then some websites.

Wetsuits keepĀ  you warmer and help you float, especially your legs so you don’t have to kick much. You will swim faster in a wetsuit. USAT allows wetsuits up to 78 degree water. June Lake is about mid-60s in the summer.

Should you get one with (full) or without sleeves (farmer john or just john). Depends on temperature of water and your swimming comfort. The neoprene sleeves will be of thinnerĀ  fabric with stretchy shoulders, but most people have more freedom of motion with sleeveless. One way to go is sleeveless with a neoprene cap.

The fit is very important. Suit should be snug, so borrowing one that is too big will let in a lot of water.

When looking at websites, do not be fooled by skinsuits or speedsuits; these are not neoprene wetsuits; they are what olympic pool swimmers wear to reduce drag.

My favorite website and has good primer on wetsuits is www.wetsuits.com by Promotion company. Ask for 2008 models prices.

www.xterrawetsuits.com/sale has johns on sale for $99 until April 21.

google away for many other options.

Wetsuits are an investment, but last many years. I’m wearing wetsuits from 10-15 years old, since I only wear them 5 times a year.

I hope this helps you get started.
